Isaac Deutscher's “Stalin", is still the best, even though it was first published, in 1949 ( and updated in 1967, after Stalin's 1953). Montefiore's 2003 biography of Stalin is about a man who lived with death every single day of his life to become the leader of millions and an infamous reminder of … 83% Upvoted. I have them on my shopping list for after Christmas! I'm finishing up reading Gulag: A history, and I'm very interested in reading more about Stalin and to a lesser extent Lenin and Trotsky. But now i dont know if its a model or it got altered afterwards. One that is perhaps accepted as a reference by historians and history buffs. After reading Gulag: A History, I feel like I need to read everything I can on this man.Do you think that Hitler and the Nazi atrocities take some of the attention away from Stalin and the absolute monster the Gulag became?I'm finishing up reading Gulag: A history, and I'm very interested in reading more about Stalin and to a lesser extent Lenin and Trotsky. I have looked on Amazon, and those that I have seen there do not entirely satisfy me (Montefiori, Radzinzky and Service) I am looking for a comprehensive work, not a work from a particular angle. I've always been interested in that time period but for some reason glossed over Stalin. A gripping account of the Russian leader attempts to present him as a human being. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

It is called "Stalin Volume I: Paradoxes of Power 1878-1928"I would suggest three books. Karl Marx and Lenin are also allowed. Lord Ragnar. And the other is "Young Stalin" which deals with Stalin before rising to power. Are there any books and/or biographies that are a must read? Stalin: the definitive biography of a tyrant, foibles and all. Or just any highly recommended, comprehensive books? Could anyone give me their opinion on what would be the best biography available on Stalin? Looking for best biography on Stalin? Deutscher wrote the biography in English, but it is available in many languages.
