There is nothing remotely progressive about this.
Unfortunately, the Oxford Union boycotters are taking a different approach. The ‘fascist’ figures who have been invited to the Union include Katie Hopkins, Steve Bannon and Tommy Robinson. If anything, the people who want to limit free speech here are the Boycott the Union campaigners. former English Defence League leader speaking at the Oxford Union, Oxford,UK . Apparently, the attendees didn’t have the capacity to evaluate Bannon’s ideas for themselves and should be told what to think by the student activist mob.More than a century before the rise of the Nazis, the German-Jewish poet Heinrich Heine prophetically wrote, ‘Where they burn books, they will also burn people’. His actions are often irresponsible and rash but I can't find any evidence that he is racist. Let the Union invite who it wants. They would most likely do so again.Audiences can be trusted to hear even the most unpleasant views. Now, these students are not literally burning books or trying to burn down the Oxford Union. I'm ashamed to admit that I written him off as a racist thug out of sheer ignorance - having watched this and a few other videos of him I have to admit that the man is definitely not a racist. They are not fascists.
It actually blew my mind a little.I have no idea who Tommy Robinson is, but the stories he had of growing up are exactly what I imagined happened to non-Muslims in Luton. For a short time in 2012 Robinson was joint Party Vice Chairman of the British Freedom Party.
If a genuinely fascist movement were to emerge, I think the British people can be trusted to recognise its dangers, and reject it.
But they share the book-burning mentality. They said Bannon’s views are so dangerous that people should be prevented from even hearing them. Thanks for posting this here!I'd watched bits and pieces of videos of Robinson before and felt that he wasn't as he was described in the media but I'm glad to have watched this video to join the dots.A far more reasonable man than his Muslim equivalents. Earlier this month, when Katie Hopkins took part in a debate on free speech at the Oxford Union, activists were chanting, ‘Build a bonfire, build a bonfire, put the Union on the top, put the Nazis in the middle and we’ll burn the fucking lot’. They seem to view everything they believe as inherently progressive and everything they oppose as fascistic.
I don't think I have seen that before.I'm really surprised by Tommy Robinson. The ‘fascist’ figures who have been invited to the Union include Katie Hopkins, Steve Bannon and Tommy Robinson. In the Oxford Union event biography – which is remarkably neutral, for a man who views Tommy Robinson as the “backbone of this country” – his new political project, the Movement, is … Back in October I hosted a podcast with the excellent blogger and author Eiynah as well as the notorious founder of the EDL, Tommy Robinson. The police ignored an assault and arrested two innocent people but couldn't explain why!Whilst I certainly won't be agreeing with the EDL any time soon, I actually gained a little bit of respect for the man.I have seen that spokesman for all Muslim concerns (Mehdi someone?) Academics and politicians sign an open letter opposing the appearance of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson at the Oxford Union. Tommy Robinson spoke at Oxford University on Wednesday night against a backdrop of protests over his appearance - and said he was unable to speak freely as he had been heavily censored by police. Tommy Robinson is the co-founder and former spokesman and leader of the English Defence League (EDL) "street protest" movement, and also founded the European Defence League.
