Achieving effective load transfer at the interface between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and aluminum (Al) is a crucial issue for fabricating high-performance CNTs reinforced Al matrix (CNT/Al) composites. This quantum movement of an electron withinnanotubes is called ballistic transport.Carbon atoms in nanotubes, like those in buckyballs, have the ability to covalentlybond to other atoms or molecules creating a new molecule with customizedproperties.

A carbon nanotube just happensto be a nonpolar molecule.the hardest material found in nature (and reportedly a girl’sbest friend).But not all nanotubes are exactly alike. While there is no gapbetween the valance and conduction bands forarmchair nanotubes (which makes them metallic),an energy gap does exist between thevalance and conduction bands in about twothirds of zigzag and chiral nanotubes — whichmakes them semiconducting.Copyright of Wiley Publishing, Inc.Obviously, it’s important to be able to controlwhat type of nanotube you are growing. In particular, the band gap can vary from zero to about 2 eV and the electrical conductivity can show metallic or semiconducting behavior. (For more about the difference,see the “Metallic or semiconducting?” sidebar, later in this chapter.) This means it doesn’t have the weak spots found in other materials, such as the boundariesbetween the crystalline grains that form steel.Nanotubes are strong but are also elastic.

Applying a negative voltage at one endand a positive voltage at the other end causes electrons to flow towards thepositive voltage. The fact is, there’snot another element with a lattice structure in the whole periodic table thatbonds to itself with as much strength as carbon atoms. The electron clouds on thesurface of each nanotube provide a mild attractive force between the nanotubes.This attraction is called van der Waals’ force (which we discuss inChapter 3).

When electronstravel through metal there is some resistance to their movement. We present the first experimental vibrational spectroscopy study providing direct evidence of a water phase inside single-walled carbon nanotubes that exhibits an unusual form of hydrogen-bonding due to confinement. On each of the carbon atoms, there is a pair of π electrons not involved in the bonding that forms a conjugated π electron cloud across the entire CNT.

(You could shine light on thenanotube, for example. The stiffness of the carbon bond helps transmit this vibrationthroughout the nanotube, providing very good thermal conductivity.A diamond, which is also a lattice of carbon atoms covalently bonded, usesthe same method to conduct heat, so it’s also an excellent thermal conductor,as well as a stunning piece of jewelry.Carbon nanotubes are a little bit sticky, as well. Bonding an atom or molecule to a nanotube to change its properties is called functionalization. This involves forces between nonpolar molecules (a moleculewithout a positive end and a negative end).

They take shortlengths of nanotubes of the type they want andattach nanocatalyst particles (typically a metalsuch as nickel) to one end. Armchair nanotubes all have electricalproperties like metals — but only about a third of all zigzag and chiralnanotubes have electrical properties like metal; the rest (roughly two thirds)have electrical properties like semiconductors. In this work, CNT/Al composites with different Ti additions and the compared materials were prepared by powder metallurgy. Ametallic carbon nanotube conducts electricity when you connect differentvoltages to each end, just like a wire.

New, long, nanotubes are grown fromthese seeds, kind of like nanotube cloning.One property of nanotubes is that they’re really, really strong.
